Chapter Ten

The next day, Mac’s head was spinning with all Abby’s instructions on how to be a liar. As a homicide detective, he’d conducted hundreds, maybe thousands, of interrogations. He knew the techniques, knew how to spot when someone else was lying.

Even though he knew how to lie, he just couldn’t do it. Somehow, he had to control the involuntary flicking of his eyes and the tendency to touch his face. But those tics were involuntary! He had no control over them. It wasn’t his fault that he was an intrinsically honest man.

Abby had suggested alternate physical cues for when he was about to deviate from the truth. He should make a conscious effort to substitute another behavior for his natural reaction. They’d tried a laugh which came out sounding moronic. People wouldn’t think he was lying…just that he was the village idiot. Then he did a tapping on his thigh. Also clumsy. Finally, they’d settled on clearing his throat and giving a slow blink.

As they left the safe house and headed to his car, Abby said, “Give it a try. Tell me a lie.”

“About what?”

“Anything. Tell me the blue sky is red. Tell me you hate broccoli.”

“I do hate broccoli.”

“Lie to me, Mac.”

If she’d been a classroom instructor, this was the point at which he would walk out of the room in annoyance. But she was Abby. She had come to mean something special to him.

He gazed down at the woman who strode confidently beside him. Her Vanessa persona was gone. Though she still had the platinum blond hair, it fell straight to her shoulders, framing her lovely face. She seemed to grow more beautiful with every hour he passed in her company. An amazing phenomenon. One that he deeply appreciated.

He felt a warm grin spread across his face. They hadn’t occupied all their time last night with his training. There had been hours of passion.

Abby was an amazing lover—compliant but not docile. Her body had responded to his touch with an eagerness that encouraged him. And she had been inventive. Last night in the shower, she had treated him to a delicate, sensual, full-body wash worthy of a geisha.

Today, he wanted to show her how much she meant to him. He paused at the driver’s side door of his car and tried to come up with a lie. This should be something big and important, not just a casual reference to the color of the sky.

He cleared his throat. Slowly, he blinked, preparing himself for the greatest lie he’d ever told. “My mother, Katherine MacCloud Granger, was a trustworthy woman. From her example, I learned that all women are to be taken at their word.”

Abby’s eyebrows raised. It was obvious that she hadn’t expected this statement. “Was there an event that convinced you that your mother was above reproach?”

He cleared his throat again, not wanting to continue. This incident from his youth formed the central core to his belief system. It was not to be taken lightly.

He lied, “For one thing, she never cheated on my father.
